A year that was particularly successful for Gewürztraminer although the other grapes fared less well. As in 1993, a superb summer was spoiled by unsettled weather in September. However, the weather improved again early in October and the most successful growers were those who harvested before and after the mid-vintage rains.
October witnessed ideal weather conditions for the development of botrytis and some of the grapes harvested at the end of October led to wines being produced with ripeness levels similar to the extraordinary 1990s. The best sweet wines from the top growers are well-structured and are now fully mature.
