Chateau Haut-Bailly

Château Haut-Bailly is a Graves Cru Classé estate that has really hit form in the last 5-7 years. Haut-Bailly was bought by the Sanders family in 1955 and was run by Jean Sanders until 1998 when Robert G. Wilmers, an American banker, purchased it. It is located in the commune of Léognan, which is usually more associated with white wine production.

Haut-Bailly has 28 hectares of vineyards which are very well sited on high, gravelly ground just east of Léognan village. The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (25%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). It is matured in small oak barriques (50% new) for 15 months and is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Haut-Bailly is renowned for its smoothness and silkiness but, since the mid 1990s, the wines have better depth of fruit as well as more grip, concentration and body. They are now amongst the top echelons of Pessac-Léognan wines.

This is a perfect summer rosé with the class that you would expect from this renowned Bordeaux château. Hints of rose and strawberry glide around the beautifully fresh, delicate palate. To top it off there is a crisp acidity that cuts through the fruit and compels one to pour another glass!

“A very stylish Claret from what was a very successful vintage for Haut-Bailly. Very refined, with supple, ripe cassis fruit on the palate, fine tannins and excellent balancing acidity. Perfect with roast lamb, but also goes well with partridge, guinea fowl or hard cheese. Haut-Bailly’s star is on the rise, and this is a wonderful chance to see what all the fuss is about at a good price. “ (Alun Griffiths MW- BBR Wine Director)

This is the best La Parde we’ve ever tasted, it hails from one of the most exciting châteaux in Bordeaux. Ch. Haut-Bailly even considered upgrading this stunning wine to their Grand Vin in 2005. Complex, elegant and imbued with the beautifully feminine style of the Grand Vin, but at a fraction of the price. Lay this down for at least five years to be truly rewarded.

Manager Véronique Sanders and Technical Director Gabriel Vialhard have worked wonders here, catapulting Haut-Bailly into the very highest echelon of Bordeaux wines. The 2007 is as silky-textured and seductive as ever with refined, creamy black cherry and redcurrant fruit and a powerful yet feminine charm. The nose is more serious than usual with ripe raspberries and coffee hints, while the famous Haut Bailly terroir bursts through on the finish alongside firm, supple tannins and intense, minerally fruit. Made with more Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) than usual, this is another absolutely irresistible Haut-Bailly.

The legendary Jean Delmas, who made 40 vintages at First Growth Ch. Haut Brion, says that the terroir at Ch. Haut-Bailly is the best in Pessac, bar none! So in a terroir year like 2006, it is not surprising this is so spectacular. From its rich, fragrant nose to its precise, silky yet sumptuous raspberry and cream fruit, huge but supple tannins and long pure finish, this is glorious. Add in its complexity, freshness and finesse and Haut-Bailly's 2006 is clearly one of the best wines of the vintage. Drink: 2013-2025.

The harvest here was brought in in small stages as each plot reached optimum ripeness. The whole process took over a month, but tasting the wine it is evident that this painstaking care and attention has paid off for the charming Véronique Sanders. A beautifully classical, perfumed, stylish nose introduces a velvety palate that conceals the firm structure for which Haut-Bailly is renowned. A plump, generous and very long finish confirms the success of this rising star in 2003. This is a serious Claret of great depth and complexity. Bravo.

"An elegant, dark ruby/purple-tinged effort displaying notes of tobacco smoke intermixed with sweet currant, cherry, and some toast, this medium-bodied wine has the hallmark purity married graciously with nicely concentrated fruit. The tannins are sweet but present and give definition to this well-made Pessac-Leognan. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2016." 90/100 points. (Robert Parker - Wine Advocate - Apr-2005)

"A superb success, the 2004 exhibits exceptional concentration, elegance, and an almost surreal finesse-infused character along with firm tannin, sweet, concentrated red currant, black currant, and cherry fruit, and subtle notes of spicy new oak. Displaying fresh acidity as well as remarkable intensity and persistence in the mouth, and medium-bodied, concentrated flavors, it should reach full maturity in 5-7 years, and last for two decades or more." 91-93/100 points-Robert Parker-Wine Advocate (Jun 06)

After the sensational 2004 Haut Bailly we were anticipating a rival, or an equal. We were wrong. The 2005 has everything that the 2004 has but cranked up by about 40%. Its intense multilayered flavours are exceptional. The wine is totally decadent and yet so precise. Packed full of typical Graves minerality from the iron-rich soil, its ripe, incredibly concentrated raspberry and cream flavours, sit alongside great acidity and massive tannins. Veronique Sanders said simply, 'This is the finest wine that we have ever made.' We say 'Buy as much of this as you can afford.' Drink: 2015-2045.
