Cab.Sauvignon Blend
Cabernet Sauvignon lends itself particularly well in blends with Merlot. This
is actually the archetypal Bordeaux
blend, though in different proportions in the sub-regions and sometimes topped
up with Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.
In the Médoc and Graves the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend can range from 95% (Mouton-Rothschild) to as low as 40%. It is particularly suited to the dry, warm, free- draining, gravel-rich soils and is responsible for the redolent cassis characteristics as well as the depth of colour, tannic structure and pronounced acidity of Médoc wines. However 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wines can be slightly hollow-tasting in the middle palate and Merlot with its generous, fleshy fruit flavours acts as a perfect foil by filling in this cavity.
In St-Emilion and Pomerol, the blends are Merlot dominated as Cabernet Sauvignon can struggle to ripen there - when it is included, it adds structure and body to the wine. Sassicaia is the most famous Bordeaux blend in Italy and has spawned many imitations, whereby the blend is now firmly established in the New World and particularly in California and Australia.

William Fèvre was one of the first in a now long list of European vignerons attracted to the benevolent climate and pure soils of Chile. Don Victor comes from panoramic vineyards in the high Maipo Valley, in the enclave of Pirque to be precise. The grapes have been hand-harvested and ... MORE

I’ve enjoyed Berrys’ GOC for as long as I can remember; a wine that says it all on the label. It’s better than ever – now produced by Dourthe – and ideal for a summer standby. (Jonathan Ray - 50 Summer Wines - Daily Telegraph - 19-Jun-2009) Drink 2009-2011 .

The complex soil structure of the Maipo Valley, allied to its location close to The Andes and ensuing cooling influences, have provided a perfect backdrop for Chono’s grapes. The grapes in question for this wine are Cabernet Sauvignon ( 85%), Cabernet Franc ( 5%) and Carménère. ... MORE

“Not as well-known as Coonawarra, twenty minutes drive to its south but much prettier; the elevated, undulating terroir giving the fruit a nice lift. Nor is the region as populated. For me though Wrattonbully has the potential, as here, of producing benchmark Australian Cabernets without the ... MORE

Chateau Dubraud has been getting good reviews from Robert Parker from the 2000 vintage onwards (which goes to show that his sphere of influence is not just confined to the rarefied level of the Cru Classés). From a lovely Right Bank vintage, this is medium-bodied with bags of bright, fresh ... MORE

However, the suave interpretation given by the team from Lynch-Bages gives a modern gloss to Graves’ more robust characteristics, with the result that this is an ...
