Syrah/Shiraz


A noble black grape variety grown particularly in the Northern Rhône where it produces the great red wines of Hermitage, Cote Rôtie and Cornas, and in Australia where it produces wines of startling depth and intensity. Reasonably low yields are a crucial factor for quality as is picking at optimum ripeness. Its heartland, Hermitage and Côte Rôtie, consists of 270 hectares of steeply terraced vineyards producing wines that brim with pepper, spices, tar and black treacle when young. After 5-10 years they become smooth and velvety with pronounced fruit characteristics of damsons, raspberries, blackcurrants and loganberries.

It is now grown extensively in the Southern Rhône where it is blended with Grenache and Mourvèdre to produce the great red wines of Châteauneuf du Pape and Gigondas amongst others. Its spiritual home in Australia is the Barossa Valley, where there are plantings dating as far back as 1860. Australian Shiraz tends to be sweeter than its Northern Rhône counterpart and the best examples are redolent of new leather, dark chocolate, liquorice, and prunes and display a blackcurrant lusciousness.

South African producers such as Eben Sadie are now producing world- class Shiraz wines that represent astonishing value for money.

Perennial favourite at BBR and, it should be said, several of its prestigious restaurant customers, Franz Venes’ Cuvée des Oliviers is a blend of 30% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 30% Carignan, 20% Cinsault, 10% Syrah and 10% Grenache. It is juicy but with a Southern French concentration, manifested by hints of herbs, licorice and spice adorning a bedrock of ripe fruit, of both red and black complexion.

"Senior sibling to the delightful 'Oliviers Rosé' this is an Appellation Minervois rather than a Vin De Pays. Its blend is 50% Cinsault, the balance divided between Syrah and Grenache. Its colour is rich, plush, its weight good, with balanced acidity and lively red fruit notes en bouche and even a hint of licorice on the finish. Fine with crustacean dishes, with salads or lighter meats."

You read it here first; the Elqui Valley is the place in Chile to grow Syrah. With its semi-arid terrrain, tempered by the cooling Pacific, and  wonderfully clear atmosphere (several observatories are located here), this has proved an ideal spot for Alvaro Espinoza to demonstrate his skills with this famously temperamental variety. Very low yields generate highly concentrated fruit, while maceration is gentle to avoid over-extraction,  A deep Syrah colour, then a friendly nose of spice, black fruit and hints of macerated prune; the palate is beautifully soft with red and black fruit flavours and finely wrought tannins. Aussie wines aren't all old hat, as this astonishingly ripe, sweet, creamy, perfumed Shiraz proves. Its violet scent and berry fruit make it a good game red , especially with venison casserole.

Just to the south of the border with Corbières, Le Clos is vinifed traditionally and does not see oak; instead it is a perfect expression of ripe old vine Grenache with 20% of Syrah added to lend a pleasing mineral grip to the rich palate, where black cherries and damsons predominate. A classic example of a Roussillon wine and will accompany spicy sausages or a haunch of venison with no little relish! It is a mystery to me why Roussillon is so far behind Languedoc in terms of perception in the UK. Hopefully this excellent example will help to redress the balance! (Simon Field, MW, BBR Buyer) MORE

Located just over the Languedoc Roussillon divide, to the west of Pérpignan, Domaine Boudau is buiding a fine reputation for excellent Grenache-based wines, the concentration and generosity of which seems to be a hall-mark of Roussillon , together of course, with their excellent value for money!

Those in search of the essence of old vine Carignan need look no further. Pejoratively described as the work-horse grape by some, Carignan is in fact the backbone and, almost mixing metaphors, the lifeblood of the Languedoc landscape. From the wonderful terroir of Les Terrasses De Larzac, soon to be promoted to stand-alone Appellation Contrôlée, Laurent and Geneviève Vidal farm biodynamically. Their Carignan is made from 55 yo vines; it is dominated by notes of dried fruits and macerated plums with quite firm tannins and a great deal of attitude. Will certainly repay double or even triple decanting and accompany a block of Comté or a haunch of venison. Will also repay patience. MORE
