2014 Ridge Vineyards, Lytton Estate Petite Sirah, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma Valley, California, USA

Description

Warm weather through the growing season and aggressive thinning led to early ripening, and, atypically, harvesting petite sirah before zinfandel. To manage the extra concentration of lower yields, we limited pump overs, and kept press wines separate. This is one of the most structured petite sirahs we have made from Lytton Estate. Sixteen months in American oak added spice and complexity to the dark, layered fruit. Full bodied but balanced, the wine will develop well to 2023.

Critics reviews

Jeb Dunnuck 90/100
The inky colored 2014 Petite Sirah Lytton Estate shows the more forward style of the vintage with its big, succulent aromas and flavors of smoked black fruits, vanilla bean, scorched earth and leather. Lightly textured, graceful especially for a Petite Sirah), with building tannin, it isn't a blockbuster and leans more towards the elegant end of the spectrum. Drink it anytime over the coming decade.

About this wine

Ridge Vineyards

Ridge Vineyards makes wines that compete in terms of quality and desirability with Bordeaux First Growths and Grand Cru White Burgundies. Winemaker Paul Draper has crafted 43 vintages at Ridge and his practical, hands-off approach to winemaking has resulted in an exceptional and highly sought-after range of wines. Although a vineyard was first planted near the top of Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1885, it lay abandoned until four Stanford Research Institute engineers bought it in 1959. Ridge Vineyards was formed in 1962 and Paul Draper was appointed as winemaker in 1969. After stunning the world by their triumph in the 1976 Judgement of Paris tasting, Ridge Vineyards shot to fame and gained cult status almost overnight.
