The 2017 Saint-Aubin En Remilly 1er Cru perhaps just misses the sense of cohesion that I discern in Joseph Colin’s other 2017s. I would like more vigor here. The palate is fresh and well balanced, the acidity nicely judged, and there’s a tang of white pepper on the malic finish, though as with the aromatics, I would like to see more depth and persistence.

From both En Remilly and Les Cortons. The 2017 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly unfurls in the glass with aromas of crisp green apple, lemon oil, freshly baked bread and white flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and layered with a pure, precise profile. Colin notes that this is a warm terroir that seldom suffers from botrytis and is favored by cooler vintages but which has suffered in the warmer climate.

Domaine Joseph Colin

Joseph Colin is one of the four children of Marc Colin of St Aubin. Having worked at the family domaine until the 2016 vintage, Joseph decided, like his brother Pierre-Yves Colin- Morey before him, to strike out on his own: he took his six-hectare share of the vineyards and set up in the small cellar under his parents’ house. His philosophy is that wines are made in the vineyard and as such his winemaking shouldn’t dominate the wines. He uses relatively little sulphur; new oak is around 15% across the range, never exceeding 20%.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is often seen as the king of white wine grapes and one of the most widely planted in the world It is suited to a wide variety of soils, though it excels in soils with a high limestone content as found in Champagne, Chablis, and the Côte D`Or.

Burgundy is Chardonnay's spiritual home and the best White Burgundies are dry, rich, honeyed wines with marvellous poise, elegance and balance. They are unquestionably the finest dry white wines in the world. Chardonnay plays a crucial role in the Champagne blend, providing structure and finesse, and is the sole grape in Blanc de Blancs.

It is quantitatively important in California and Australia, is widely planted in Chile and South Africa, and is the second most widely planted grape in New Zealand. In warm climates Chardonnay has a tendency to develop very high sugar levels during the final stages of ripening and this can occur at the expense of acidity. Late picking is a common problem and can result in blowsy and flabby wines that lack structure and definition.

Recently in the New World, we have seen a move towards more elegant, better- balanced and less oak-driven Chardonnays, and this is to be welcomed.
