Description

David has four parcels here: two at the top and two at the bottom of the vineyard. This is an early-ripening site on alluvial soil, with gravel over clay. The result is an intensely perfumed wine with soft, gravelly tannins and a charming nature. Drink 2022-2028 (Not Tasted)

Moderate reduction dominates the fruit today but there is fine verve and freshness to the nicely detailed flavors that offers good depth but not quite the same persistence on the more structured finale.

The Cent Vignes delivered the lowest acidity, not enjoying the heatwaves. More lactic notes here, It’s the barrel. Try another. Dense crimson, 25% whole bunch keeps it fresh enough, and the ripe raspberry fruit has some energy. An early drinking 2019 with attractive fruit quality.

The 2019 Beaune Les Cents Vignes 1er Cru, which includes 25% stem addition, has quite a distinctive, sea spray and oyster shell bouquet, plenty of dark berry fruit, and hints of kelp emerging with time. The palate is beautifully balanced and streamlined with a fine bead of acidity. Not powerful, almost understated in style, leading to a finely tuned, minerally finish. Not great length, but it is a beautiful Beaune.

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.

Domaine des Croix

The former Domaine Duchet in Beaune has been bought by American Roger Forbes and his co-investors, and entrusted to the care of David Croix, the gifted winemaker for Camille Giroud. David, the emerging talent of the year according to Bourgogne Aujourd'hui magazine (issue no. 73) is in complete charge at the domaine, which has been renamed Domaine des Croix. The first vintage, 2005, comprised Corton-Charlemagne, Bourgogne Rouge, Beaune and various Beaune premiers crus from Pertuisots, Cent Vignes, Bressandes and Grèves. The vineyards have been farmed organically since 2008. From 2009 there will be Aloxe-Corton and Corton Grèves.
