2021 Volnay, Camille Giroud, Burgundy

Description

This is a blend of Cros Martin and Lurets, both of which are on deeper soils towards the southern (Meursault) end of the appellation. The work that Carel has encouraged the grower to undertake in the vineyard is paying off. This is juicy and very tasty, with plenty of red fruit and a bit more grip than previously.

Ruby with a lighter rim. The nose needs freshening up. Pretty red raspberry fruit on the mouth, well integrated oak, very pretty on the palate with few tannins and the right acid balance. Very pleasing length. More Volnay in character in 2021 than in recent hotter vintages.

From the villages portions of Les Grands Champs and Les Lurets.

A cool and restrained nose grudgingly gives up its aromas of violet, spiced plum, and discreet green tea hints. The super-sleek and beautifully delineated middleweight flavours exude an almost palpable minerality that gives a sense of lift to the compact, firm, lingering finale. This is a quality Volnay Villages that is also worth considering, provided that you intend to cellar it for at least a few years first.

About this wine

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy's Côte d'Or. Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climats of the Côte d`Or.

Volnay

The finest and most elegant red wines of the Côte de Beaune are grown in Volnay, a village which might be twinned with Chambolle-Musigny in the Côte de Nuits, for the high active chalk content in the soil and comparatively low clay content. Whereas in earlier times Volnay was made in a particularly light, early drinking style, these days there are many producers making wines which age extremely well.
