Pouilly-sur-Loire is a catch-all wine appellation in the Loire valley, so named after the town of Pouilly-sur-Loire to the right bank of the Loire river and is typically intended for the less distinguished wines of the nearby Pouilly Fumé appellation.
It encompasses an ever-diminishing vineyard area of old vine Chasselas (once planted to satisfy local demand), which is now gradually replaced by plantings of Sauvignon Blanc. Pouilly-sur-Loire's official minimum alcoholic strength is 9%, as opposed to Pouilly-Fumé's 11%.
