Rosso Piceno is an important red wine DOC sub-zone in Marches covering much of the eastern flank of the region, stretching from the superiore area between Ascoli Piceno and the sea north through the coastal hills to Senigallia.
Rosso Piceno's vineyards are situated primarily in the upper hills with altitudes ranging from 300 to 700 meters above sea level.
The key ingredient in Rosso Piceno blends is the Sangiovese grape, suplemmented by Montepulciano d' Abruzzo and, at times, the indigenous grape variety Passerina.
