Altea Illotto

Altea Illotto

Altea Illotto is the Sardo union of Maurizio Altea, agronomist, & Adele Illotto, enologist, whose cantina was born in 1992 with the explicit idea of producing wine and olive oil organically from their land in the Sardinian regions of Serdiana (vines) & Seneghe (olive groves).

The idea solidified in 1997 with the completion of their vinification wine cellar, & in 2000 their first bottle was born. Maurizio’s father had, like many, sold all the fruit to the cooperative but Maurizio has chosen a different path, bottling approximately 500 cases every year from the tiny 5.5ha estate; the remainder sold off in bulk.

The vineyards are located at approximately 160 metres above sea level in the Sibiola viticultural zone close to the village of Serdiana, forty minutes drive north of Cagliari & 20 km close to the sea in either direction. The soils are a mix of sandy schist, planted with indigenous varieties Monica, Carignano, & Cannonau, & white calcareous clay on which the Nasco & Vermentino are to be found. Trellising is both alberello & guyot, with irrigation when absolutely necessary.

Adele & Maurizio produce two wines: a Bianco & a Rosso, both wines the product of indigenous grape varieties & wild yeast. Their olive oil is arguably finer still!
