An understanding of Bordeaux is essential for any would-be wine connoisseur. Discover why the region has such an enviable reputation for its red wines and explore its whites too. Learn about the landmark 1855 classification of Bordeaux and taste a plethora of wines, which continue to have glowing reputations today.

Not only will you have the chance to compare and contrast all the famous village names, but you will also taste older wines from the region. All this will be followed by a Bordelais-themed lunch in our cellars, accompanied by even more fine Bordeaux as it is meant to be enjoyed – with excellent food. By the end of this hugely enjoyable day, you should have a deeper understanding of the region and the ability to navigate the Clarets on any restaurant wine list with ease.

Join us as we explore Burgundy’s stunning white vinous gems. This tasting will take you from steely backboned Chablis in the north right through to the softer, fleshier wine of the Mâconnais. On the way you will also discover the inimitable treasures of Burgundy’s most famous region: the Côte d’Or. This course will be a fun and informative way to complete the WSET Level 1 wine qualification and will end with the exam. Starting at 9am with tea and coffee, we’ll stop for a delicious picnic lunch at around 1pm, resuming studies in the afternoon until 4pm. We will end the day with the exam which will be completed by 5pm.

The WSET Level 1 Award is an internationally recognised course devised by the Wine and Spirit Education Trust. For individuals new to wine study, this qualification provides a hands-on introduction to the world of wine. You’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell and taste, looking at how to pair wine with food. A selection of wines will be tasted, offering a broad introduction. The examination (a 30-question multiple choice paper) is sat at the end of the day, to be completed within 45 minutes. Upon successful completion of the course you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

The course cost covers WSET examination fees, WSET course materials, WSET accredited tuition, use of Berry Bros. & Rudd equipment and tasting samples. Course materials are sent to you in advance after registration and we recommend that you read them thoroughly before starting the course.

Our One-Day Introductory Wine School is a relaxed yet educational experience, designed to introduce you to the basics of wine tasting and the classic grape varieties. Your tutor will guide you through different pairs of wines, helping you to compare and contrast them and then think about your observations, linking these to the climate and country where the grapes were grown.

We will cover all the elements in the glass, from acidity through to tannin, alcohol and oak. At the same time, we will look at the key grape varieties and their regions. You’ll learn to trust your intuitions and may discover you know far more than you gave yourself credit for. The morning tutorial is followed by a superb four-course food and wine matching lunch, during which you will have the chance to practise your newfound skills.

With Christmas coming up, we’ve made our monthly tasting a little special. Join us to sample eight wines from the Old and New World – chosen for their ability to match with Christmas feasts. Hosted by Douglas Storer and Clara Bouffard, Fine Wine Specialists, this interactive and fun tasting will focus on how to pair the wines with your festive meals. And, in keeping with the season of giving, you’ll get to take a bottle of our Good Ordinary Claret home with you.

This evening course will be a fun and informative way to complete the WSET Level 2 wine qualification. We will cover the course over four weeks, with the exam in the fifth week. Starting at 5.30pm, each session will include a light buffet supper, ending at 9.15pm.

The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines is devised by the Wine & Spirit Education Trust and is the internationally recognised course that is followed by those entering the wine and hospitality trades. It can be comfortably achieved by those with little or no previous wine knowledge. A selection of wines will be tasted at each session, offering a broad introduction. The course also teaches tasting techniques from which to build tasting experience. We cover the syllabus over four weeks and the examination is sat in the final fifth session by way of a 50-question multiple choice paper to be completed within one hour.

Join us in the Pickering Cellar for our Introduction to Wine Course. You will learn about wine over six Wednesday evenings.

The series begins by looking at the factors that influence the balance of wine, learning about alcohol, tannins, acidity, aroma and flavour, and how to describe wine, as well as spotting levels of oak influence and ageing. The following five sessions are dedicated to studying three or four different grape varieties and contrasting key examples from Europe and the New World.

The idea is to enjoy harnessing your natural tasting ability while applying your observations to facts about the provenance of the wines. During the course we tackle all sorts of questions and aim to challenge common myths about wine – and, most importantly, increase your confidence in tasting. Cheese, nibbles and our Head Chef’s canapés are served at each session, along with plenty of water. The course will follow the below outline, with the emphasis firmly on learning through taste. Bring your guests to dine in the Napoleon Cellar on Monday evenings, when we hand over the reins to our Head Chef Stewart Turner. Previously of the Michelin-starred Waterside Inn at Bray, Stewart will cook up an absolute storm – preparing a sumptuous three-course dinner, alongside which we will pour our award-winning Own Selection range. Expect a delicious apéritif in our original 17th century shop, alongside Stewart’s signature (and utterly moreish) gougères, before descending to the atmospheric Napoleon Cellar where a further four wines will be poured alongside Stewart’s menu. With over 100 different appellations, approaching the mammoth that is Burgundy can be a daunting task for newcomers. This tasting is designed to give you a better understanding of the region and how its appellations differ. After a glass of a beautiful Crémant de Bourgogne, you’ll begin with a trio from Chablis with different quality levels – village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru. From here, you’ll move on to a quartet of whites from Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Pouilly-Fuissé. Join us for an indulgent high tea spent tasting seven Champagnes in three flights, alongside an apéritif and a sparkling wine from England. We’ll begin the tasting with a rosé apéritif. The first flight will showcase the different grape varieties used in Champagne alongside a lobster salad and some delicious London-cure smoked salmon terrine prepared by our Head Chef. The second flight will showcase some well-known producers, comparing and contrasting different House styles. As you learn how Champagne is made, coronation chicken and a scrumptious home-made sausage roll will be served. We will then move on to discuss the concept of vintage Champagne. We will end the day with a demi-sec English sparkling wine alongside a sumptuous selection encompassing two plump scones (one fruit and one plain) with home-made raspberry jam and, of course, clotted cream, plus a delectable brownie dressed with our King's Ginger sauce. Our One-Day Introductory Wine School is a relaxed yet educational experience, designed to introduce you to the basics of wine tasting and the classic grape varieties. Your tutor will guide you through different pairs of wines, helping you to compare and contrast them and then think about your observations, linking these to the climate and country where the grapes were grown.
 
We will cover all the elements in the glass, from acidity through to tannin, alcohol and oak. At the same time, we will look at the key grape varieties and their regions. You’ll learn to trust your intuitions and may discover you know far more than you give yourself credit for. The morning tutorial is followed by a superb four-course food and wine matching lunch, during which you will have the chance to practise your newfound skills.
