Description

This delicious single cask offering from esteemed independent rum bottlers Mezan shows a charming expression of proper Jamaica rum. Produced at the oldest distillery in Jamaica, the classic “funk” notes of overripe fruit and exotic undergrowth are in easy harmony with softly spoken oak. The barrel spent much of its maturation in a European cellar, at a comparatively cooler temperature than its place of origin, and it is this to which I attest the effortless poise. Pack some buttered tea loaf for a balmy park picnic, load up some James Brown and a tot or two of this alongside. A truly worthy addition to any spirits shelf.

Mezan

Mezan

Mezan are one of a few independent rum bottlers that are pioneering the idea of ‘terroir’ within the rum category, and this is evident across their entire portfolio. After a period of tropical ageing, which creates real depth from the wood, Mezan bring their rums across the Atlantic to further age in Europe. The cooler climate of Europe facilitates a much slower ageing process, which, in turn, allows additional complexities to develop whilst, in their words “also preventing oxidisation and an excessive build-up of esters”. This is standard practice for Mezan, and their simple philosophy is to craft pure and singular expressions that reflect the country, style, culture, and DNA of the distillery they come from.

Mezan take pride in their unadulterated, unfiltered, and unaltered rums, meaning no additional sugars, colourings or flavourings are added. All the flavour is created during the distillation and ageing process, with Mezan choosing to use only ex-Bourbon casks for maturation for their mild influence on the final taste.
