2014 Ridge Estate Merlot, Santa Cruz Mountains, California Gift Box

An icon of California’s wine scene, Ridge Vineyards has long pioneered elegant styles of wine in the state. This – its Estate Merlot – is utterly delicious: rich, bright red fruits dominate this nose, with a dense core of cherry and liquorice. The tannins are rich and round, seeming almost sweet thanks to time spent in American oak. Long and concentrated, this is serious Merlot that can stand up to any red-meat feast or hard cheese (beef Wellington would be a superb match).
