Description

Grus (crane) is named after a constellation visible above the Elqui Valley, whose pristine skies are prized by stargazers and winemakers alike. It’s a blend of Syrah, Garnacha, Petite Syrah and Petit Verdot, grown at over 1700 metres altitude, where the grapes become fully ripe without losing their refreshing acidity. On the nose, expect aromas of fresh red fruit, violets and a tantalising hint of wet stone, which persists on the palate. Marcelo attributes the wine’s harmonious, silky texture to his beloved concrete eggs.

Wine Advocate92/100
The 2015 Grus is a blend of 50% Syrah, 26% Garnacha, 14% Petite Sirah and 10% Petit Verdot fermented in lagar and matured in egg-shaped concrete vats. They removed the Malbec to make a varietal bottling, so this is different from the previous vintage, where Petit Verdot now provides some freshness and perhaps an herbal twist. The soils are all granite-based, which provides very good freshness; the wine has moderate alcohol and superb freshness and acidity. It's nicely textured and has fine-grained tannins. Long and tasty, with very good tension. There is a note of orange peel that also showed in the pure varietal Syrah. A great mountain blend. 14,826 bottles produced.

About this WINE

Vinedos Alcohuaz

Vinedos Alcohuaz

Alcohuaz is the name of the small village near the vineyard. Viñedos de Alcohuaz is a young project, the vines are 10 years old now and planted on granite and volcanic soils in the semi-arid environment of the Elqui Valley, some 500km north of Santiago. At 1800 - 2200m altitude, these vineyards are some of the highest in the world. The vineyard are farmed organically and biodynamically but currently the winery does not seek certification. Marcelo Retamal of de Martino fame is responsible for winemaking at this 18ha estate.

GRUS is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah and Malbec, fermented in stone lagares and aged for 12 months in Nomblot concrete Eggs. The name GRUS comes from a constellation of stars - the crane bird.

RHU is a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Petite Sirah, fermented in stone lagares and aged in a mixture of concrete eggs and Stockinger foudres. The meaning of RHU is the portal to the spiritual world. This is a more structured wine than GRUS, brimming with volcanic power.
