Domenic Torzi is of South-Central Italian origin, a heritage reflected in some of the grape varieties he grows and the “Amarone” treatment he gives to his Frost Dodger Shiraz. With his partner Tracy Matthews he has set up home since 1996 on 10 hectares of land in the high Eden Valley, a cool region in South Australia more famous for Riesling than Negroamaro or Shiraz. Not only do they make great, characterful wines, but they also make fabulous olive oil from some of the ancient wild olive trees in the Barossa Valley.
This is classic Eden Valley late-picked dry Riesling, with an intense nose of waxed citrus fruit, lemon sherbet and candles. The palate initially displays lemon bon-bon sweetness with a lovely rounded texture before a burst of lively, steely acidity dominates a refreshing finish. Ideal with rich smoked fish.

Medium garnet in color, the 2010 Shiraz Hill of Grace reveals a slightly reticent yet beguiling nose of kirsch, dried mulberries and plum preserves with nuances of star anise, potpourri, cloves, dusty earth and menthol. Medium to full-bodied with youthfully taut, mouth-filling perfumed berry preserves and exotic spice flavors, the fruit is well framed by rounded, polished tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with incredible length. It could still benefit from 2-4 years in bottle before entering its drinking window but is already stunning.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2012 Shiraz Mount Edelstone Keyneton Vineyard has aromas of crushed blackberries, mulberries and red and black plums with nuances of smoked bacon, fertile loam and cracked black pepper. Medium to full-bodied, it offers beautiful grace, elegance and intensity on the palate with silky fine tannins and lively acidity, finishing with great length.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2008 Hill of Grace has a slightly closed nose before giving subtle notes of ripe black cherries, blackberries and violets with hints of cedar, pepper, green tea and cumin. There's a slight raisin character on the full-bodied palate with crisp acid, dense fruit and firm, grainy tannins, finishing long.

A blend of 57% Merlot and 43% Cabernet fermented using traditional methods followed by maturation in French oak. A nose full of plum, damson and violet followed by a palate which has refreshing acidity with the aforementioned oak nicely balanced by a core of sweet black fruit.

The vineyard was planted in 1912 and, unusually for the time, it was planted exclusively with Shiraz. The soil is composed of clay and loam which causes these 100 year old vines to be low yielding. The wine itself is something of an extrovert, a nose of fresh mint, chocolate and a combination of both red and black fruit. The palate is full, rich and rounded with a pleasing gift of caramel imparted by the oak. These vines certainly aren’t showing their age if this wine is anything to go by.

This wine bears the name of one of the region’s pioneering winemakers who championed single varietal table wines with quality and flavour always at the top of his agenda. It has a nose that gives the drinker a real sense of place; eucalyptus, ripe black fruit and a creamy savouriness in tandem with a saline character which keeps it fresh and appealing. The palate is spicy but tannins are ripe and rounded, there is a lovely mouth feel and the finish is long and lingering, brimming with finesse.

This site was planted by pastoralist Jospeh Heynes in 1842 who was keen to provide music and culture for other settlers in the region. The wine is peppery on the nose, however the fruit characteristics are cooler, with blueberry, cherry and cranberry evident. The palate has good length, balanced acidity, fine grained well integrated tannins and a poise which can be attributed to its age. This wine is certainly cultured and I am sure the early vintages were consumed with gusto regardless of the quality of the music on offer at the estate.
