2016 Mestizaje Tinto, Bodega Mustiguillo, Valencia, Spain

Description

Bodega Mustiguillo is a certified organic family-run project which has worked hard to pioneer the revival of indigenous grape varieties, championing the red variety Bobal which forms 72% of this blend, alongside 17% Garnacha and 11% Syrah. The use of oak (10 months in French barrels) is restrained, creating a well-balanced and refreshing wine. It’s fruit-driven, with notes of dark berry fruit mixing with earthier notes of cocoa powder and a subtle hint of cinnamon and ground nutmeg. The finish is long, concentrated and fresh – thanks to the vineyards’ altitude of 800 metres above sea-level. Enjoy this with red meat or tomato-based dishes. Drink now to 2021.

About this WINE

Bodega Mustiguillo

Bodega Mustiguillo

One word summarises the Mustiguillo message and that word is Bobal, one of the greatest and most under-rated of Spanish grape varieties, and now on the cusp of a renaissance in the Mediterranean vineyards to mirror that of the Mencia varietal in Bierzo and other parts of North-West Spain. Mustiguillo is a family project, dedicated to organic viticulture and the pursuit of elegance and finesse rather than excess oak and the like. A well-rehearsed mantra maybe, but one that does not have many adherents of such pedigree.

Valencia

Valencia

East-facing eponymously, and Mediterranean of climate and culture, the appellation of Valencia produces wines from a diverse array of styles and grapes, including, for the white varieties, Merseguera, Malvasía, Pedro Ximénez, Moscatel Romano, Planta Fina, Macabeo, Chardonnay, and to a lesser extent, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon; and, for the red grapes, Monastrell, Garnacha Tintorera, Garnacha Tinta, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Bobal, Syrah.

Wine is bred in the bone here, and at all price points. Two of the most exciting bodegas are Bodega Mustiguillo and El Angosto, which certainly deserve to be better-known.

The red 2016 Mestizaje is a blend of Bobal with 18% Syrah and 14% Garnacha fermented separately and with some full clusters with indigenous yeasts. It matured in French oak barrels and vats for ten months. There is a little less wine, as they definitively removed Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from the blend. That, plus a fresher year, contributed to a fresher winejuicy and tastywith a mixture of red and black fruit and a chalky sensation in the palate. It finishes long and tasty. Very good quality for the price asked. 94,100 bottles were filled in August 2017.
