Description

A cool, pure, very pretty and stylish nose freely offers up its array of various floral elements that include rose petal and acacia blossom as well as a variety of spice nuances on the pear and apple scents. The gorgeously textured, intense and concentrated larger-scaled flavours possess superb depth and persistence in the beautifully well-balanced finale. This is really quite classy and is more a Bâtard of refinement than raw power and muscle.

Two barrels. Up to 2018, Damien has made the wine in one new barrel and a one-year-old. From 2019 he has switched to two barrels of one-year-old. Pale lemon colour, with a very backward nose. This is the new style of Bâtard, that is to say intensely vibrant rather than four square’ to quote an esteemed former colleague. This 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet from Marc Colin has magnificent density behind it but is still not the most massive example around. I really like the measured infiltration of acidity, this is going to make a fine bottle.

The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru matured in around 50% new oak (two barrels only). It has a very clean and precise bouquet with scents of oyster shell and crushed rocks, later a discrete eucalyptus note emerges loitering in the wings. The palate is well balanced with a powerful opening, and a richer, almost decadent in style. In fact, Damien Colin fetched a second bottle for me to taste. That was different, sans the eucalyptus scent on the nose and demonstrating more strictness and greater persistency in the mouth. The difference originated from the pre-prepared sample rather than the wine itself and based on the second example, it shows enormous potential.

About this WINE

Domaine Marc Colin

Domaine Marc Colin

Domaine Marc Colin
Marc Colin has now handed over this leading St-Aubin domaine to three of his children, Damien, Joseph and Caroline. The eldest, Pierre-Yves, was involved until 2005 harvest, when he took out his share of the vineyards to be worked separately. The remainder is still a sizeable operation, with 20 hectares spread between 30 appellations, 25 of them for white wines.
The Colin reds come from St-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet and Santenay, including a fine vieilles vignes bottling which comes from a plot in Les Champs Claude planted in 1901. This and the Saint-Aubin Les Frionnes are worthy of note, though the Domaine is much better known for its white wines. These include no less than eight bottlings of premier cru St-Aubin plus Puligny- and Chassagne-Montrachet and their associated grands crus.

Bâtard-Montrachet

Bâtard-Montrachet

Renowned for its exceptional white wines, Bâtard-Montrachet is a Grand Cru appellation, situated in the heart of the Côte de Beaune subregion of the larger Côte-d'Or department. The vineyards are nestled between the villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet.

The terroir is characterised by a mixture of limestone and clay soils, with a significant proportion of limestone, which contributes to the unique mineral character of the wines. The region benefits from a continental climate with some influence from the nearby Saône River, providing ideal conditions for cultivating Chardonnay grapes.

The wines are celebrated for their complexity, richness, and intensity and typically exhibit ripe fruit flavours such as citrus, pear, and peach, along with notes of hazelnut, honey, and minerals. Bâtard-Montrachet wines are known for their exceptional ageing potential, often improving and developing more complexity over many years in the bottle.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is often seen as the king of white wine grapes and one of the most widely planted in the world It is suited to a wide variety of soils, though it excels in soils with a high limestone content as found in Champagne, Chablis, and the Côte D`Or.

Burgundy is Chardonnay's spiritual home and the best White Burgundies are dry, rich, honeyed wines with marvellous poise, elegance and balance. They are unquestionably the finest dry white wines in the world. Chardonnay plays a crucial role in the Champagne blend, providing structure and finesse, and is the sole grape in Blanc de Blancs.

It is quantitatively important in California and Australia, is widely planted in Chile and South Africa, and is the second most widely planted grape in New Zealand. In warm climates Chardonnay has a tendency to develop very high sugar levels during the final stages of ripening and this can occur at the expense of acidity. Late picking is a common problem and can result in blowsy and flabby wines that lack structure and definition.

Recently in the New World, we have seen a move towards more elegant, better- balanced and less oak-driven Chardonnays, and this is to be welcomed.
