2019 Barolo, Prapò, Ceretto, Piedmont, Italy

Description

Located on the cooler side of the Serralunga ridge, with a south-east-facing aspect, Prapò delivers a classic expression of the commune, that teeters towards the austere. But, however firm they may appear, the tannins are ripe and deliver an intensity and verticality to the wine’s expression. The fruit is compact and precise, hinting at sour cherry, and certainly offer more of a red fruit than a black tea or herbal expression. This is a wine that demands – and wins – attention.

Critics reviews

Georgie Hindle 94/100
Ceretto is a biodynamic estate and this wine seems to demonstrate the stature of their vineyards. The nose of this Prapò is extremely graceful – violet, cinnamon, almost sage, and blood orange – expressing all the elegance of Cerretta, to which this MGA is very close. Refreshing and velvety, almost smooth, it's a precise Barolo full of elegance despite some warmth on the dusty, fierce finish.

The 2019 Barolo Prapò is probably the most finessed Prapò I have ever tasted from Ceretto. Dark cherry, plum, lavender, rose petal, menthol, licorice and spice are all amplified in this broad, explosive Barolo. A huge kick of Serralunga acid and tannin punctuates the finish.

About this wine

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.

Ceretto

This family-run business was founded by Riccardo Ceretto in 1937, principally as a négociant in Alba. He was joined by his sons Bruno and Marcello in the 1960s. Wanting to make and sell their own wines, they began to buy premium land in Barolo and Barbaresco and were among the very first in the region to see the potential of single-vineyard wines. Bruno’s children, Federico and Roberta, and Marcello’s, Alessandro and Lisa, joined in the 1990s. After a period of change and experimentation, a particular style emerged in 2010, utilising shorter skin contact, and a mix of barrique and small botte for a supple but precise expression of Nebbiolo. The family are also involved in various artistic and heritage projects, including the rejuvenation of the famous Piedmontese hazelnuts and two restaurants in Alba: La Piola and the three-star Michelin Piazza Duomo.
