2021 Langhe Nebbiolo, Lasarin, Marcarini, Piedmont, Italy

Description

“Lasarin” in this wine’s name comes from local dialect, meaning “a little La Serra”. This wine is a blend of the younger vines of Brunate in La Serra, which give depth and direction on the palate. Half the wine comes from fruit grown in the sandy soils of Neviglie, which lend softness, perfume, and a gleaming fruit crunch. This is a bright, spicy and purposeful Nebbiolo, with freshness, a creamy palate, and zippy tannins.

Critics reviews

Kerin O'Keefe 92/100

Made in cement and steel, this lovely red opens with aromas of blue flower and ripe, woodland berry. On the delicious palate, lithe tannins gently support juicy red cherry and hints of baking spice. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced.

About this wine

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is the grape behind the Barolo and Barbaresco wines and is hardly ever seen outside the confines of Piedmont. It takes its name from "nebbia" which is Italian for fog, a frequent phenomenon in the region.

Langhe

Langhe

Langhe is an all-encompassing zone lying due south of Alba and the River Tanaro in the province of Cuneo. Barolo and Barbaresco both lie within its boundaries. Langhe is also the name of a regional DOC zone, which is used to classify wines made outside of the traditional Piemontese varietal scheme. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc wines from the region are, for example, classified as Langhe DOC.

Marcarini

Few views in Barolo can compete with the one from Marcarini’s terrace in La Morra. Encompassing most of the region’s communes and vineyards, one only has to look south-east to see Barolo’s modest size, cradled in the Italian Alps. It is fitting that Marcarini occupies this prime location; the winery is built underneath La Morra’s medieval watchtower, a signpost to the Marchetti family cantina that’s visible across the region.
