2013 Château Montrose, St Estèphe, Bordeaux

Description

This is incredibly complex and defies the vintage. It is dark, well structured with more fine ripe tannins, a complexity then I found on most of the wines this vintage and a streak of minerality and energy and a beautiful floral aromatic note on the nose. St-Estèphe escaped the torrential rain at harvest that plagued most of the Medoc and the resulting wines are incredible. An unusual blend as it has no Cabernet Franc and the final blend is 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot.

Critics reviews

Neal Martin 90/100
The 2013 Montrose has an understated, lilting bouquet with blackberry and briary scents and dried rose petals, gaining more intensity as it opens over 2-3 minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. It shows good weight in the mouth, quite linear and masculine typical for Montrose) but there is respectable detail and minerality coming through on the satisfying finish. Not a top tier Montrose, but then again, why would it be in this difficult vintage. It will still give pleasure over the next 12-15 years.

Saint-Estèphe

Saint-Estèphe

Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost of the most important communes of the Médoc, bordering Pauillac on its southernmost border, with only a gully and stream separating it from Ch. Lafite Rothschild. The wines can appear austere in youth, but the best typically display good depth of colour, pronounced acidity and tannins in youth, and are exceptionally long-lived. At their best, they are the equal of almost any Bordeaux.
